Kata Practitioner Day – March 22nd (Full)

Explore the 4-step Improvement Kata method through practitioners sharing real world examples.  What is Toyota Kata?  It’s two intentional routines – the Improvement Kata, layered with the Coaching Kata.  Together, these two routines help individuals become stronger, more confident problem solvers.

The purpose of a Kata Practitioner Day is to:

  • Provide a forum to learn from your fellow NWHPEC Kata practitioners,
  • Introduce the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata to those new to this improvement and skill building approach, and
  • Hear how the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata is being applied in all aspects of an organization

Event Details:

Date: Wednesday, March 22, 2023
Time: 9am – noon
Location: Smith Gardens (23200 Hubbard Cutoff Rd NE, Aurora, OR)
Cost: No charge (we just ask that you aren’t a no-show)

Session Overview:

You will see five, short presentations from your peers using a variety of mediums, such as walking through storyboards, traditional PowerPoint, and observing a real Coaching Cycle, to show how the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata are being used in different aspects of a business, by diving into each of the four steps of the Improvement Kata:

  • Understand the Direction or Challenge (Andres Alamillo, Smith Gardens)
  • Grasp the Current Condition (Tim Bender, ATI Materials)
  • Establish the Next Target Condition (Aitor Martinez, Nike)
  • Experiment Towards the Target Condition (demonstrated in a live coaching cycle with a coach and learner from Smith Gardens)

The intent is to provide a high-level glimpse of the four steps and provide examples of how various organizations are applying this way of thinking and acting in their daily routines to help drive employee development, problem solving, and continuous improvement.  We’ll also have the opportunity to participate in the hands-on “Puzzle” activity, to show the power of PDCA and scientific thinking.
