Business leaders are responsible for achieving positive results while building an environment where their people are challenged, respected, and valued. Scott Simmons, CEO of Skutt Ceramics, is opening their doors to NWHPEC members to share his philosophy and practices for creating a thriving workplace and positive company culture. Specific steps Skutt has taken to help team members achieve their potential and professional growth in a respectful environment will be shared and discussed. You’ll have the opportunity to attend their leadership daily management huddle. Additionally, a shop tour to highlight steps taken to achieve his goals will demonstrate specifics to aid other executives pursuing similar results.
“Our premise, when Team Members are valued through specific challenges, they achieve things they never thought possible. We intentionally develop opportunities for their input and creativity.”
Join us in learning how the Skutt leadership team is improving business performance by challenging their team members to creatively solve specific business problems.
This includes:
- Cultural Visual Design Graphic (VDG) – strategy enrollment
- Weekly Management Meeting – business metrics/performance, accountability, and improvement
- Taking back the factory floor – improving factory utilization
- Discuss Lean evolution, from tools to leadership and culture
- Applying lean systems to make work and problems visible while allowing the people who do the work a chance creatively solve problems and improve their work
More about our host executive, Scott Simmons:
As Scott progressed through his career from learning lean, to teaching lean, to applying lean in non-standard situations he realized, “All the focus and learning about lean or the Toyota Production System since the mid-80s has been about tools, what we missed is it was never about the tools, it’s always been about human creativity. Business provides great opportunity and challenges for human creativity to be explored and applied.”
“The Toyota style is not to create results by working hard. It is a system that says there is no limit to people’s creativity. People don’t go to Toyota to ‘work’ they go there to ‘think’.” – Taiichi Ohno
The real need for deeper level system support through leadership behaviors and practices became apparent over years of leading organizations. In his current role, his goal is to develop transferable leadership skills and practices that will develop and sustain a “People-First” company culture.
