Benchmark Request: Employee Turnover

Myers Container wants to learn more about employee turnover:

In this hot job market we are trying to gain a better understanding of why people leave good companies:

  • Do you track turnover data? If so what is the %?
  • Where do you recruit most of your laborers?
  • Do you do exit interviews at the laborer level?
    • If so, what is your finding for the most often reason they leave?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rebecca,

    Yes Columbia does track turnover data and for 2016 we were about 11%.
    These days we recruit most of our employees through staffing agencies. We do post through Craigslist and other sites as well, but seem to have better lunch through the agencies.

    We do exit interviews with all employees and the most common reason for leaving is communication, the “we’ve always done it that way” mindset and of course Supervisors. We are putting a renewed focus on training in these areas with both our Supervisors/Managers and our employees in an effort to help lower our turnover rate.

    We do track our employee turnover rates. If interested in some of our data, email me and I can share it with you.

    We recruit predominantly through temp agencies. We also track temp-to-hire success rates.

    We do not conduct exit interviews regularly, but I do reach out to our agency contacts for a reason for that individual leaving if that is the case.
